After meticulously evaluating Lavazza’s Gran Selezione Ground Coffee Blend, I am ready to share my comprehensive review. This analysis is based on my proprietary six-metric scoring framework, designed to assess the overall quality and value of the coffee.

1. True Roast: 4/5 

One of the undeniable strengths of Lavazza Gran Selezione is its faithfulness to the advertised roast level. This product is marketed as a dark roast, and upon first impressions, it seemed to adhere to this claim. Upon opening the bag, I was greeted by the sight of uniformly dark beans, evidence of a rich and robust roasting process.

The aroma that permeated the room was delightfully toasty and inviting, promising an intense flavor experience that is characteristic of dark roasts. This tangible alignment with the manufacturer’s assertion contributed positively to its True Roast™ score.

2. Body: 2/5 

Regrettably, the body of Lavazza Gran Selezione failed to live up to my expectations. A critical component of a dark roast is a rich, full-bodied texture, offering a silky smooth experience that fully envelopes the palate. This coffee fell short in this area, presenting a consistency closer to that of a medium roast than a dark one.

The brew was a bit watery for my liking, depriving me of the profound sensory journey I had anticipated. As a result, this coffee didn’t score well in the Body metric.

3. Flavor: 2/5 

In terms of flavor, Lavazza Gran Selezione left room for improvement. The promised notes of dark chocolate and citrus were present, but they felt subdued and not fully expressed. A well-executed dark roast should present a robust, complex flavor profile that engages the palate. While the coffee was far from tasteless, it lacked the depth and complexity that one would typically expect from a dark roast. Therefore, it only managed to secure a 2 out of 5 in the Flavor category. 

4. Acidity: 1/5 

Acidity is a critical aspect of any coffee, with the desired level often correlating with the roast type. Lighter roasts are known for their bright acidity, adding a crisp, tangy edge that complements their nuanced flavor profiles. Dark roasts, on the other hand, should present minimal acidity, with the focus on rich, full-bodied flavors. 

In this regard, the Lavazza Gran Selezione, unfortunately, fell short. The coffee exhibited an unexpectedly high level of acidity that left a harsh, somewhat sour impression. This excessive acidity was out of sync with the expected profile of a dark roast, pulling down the overall rating in this category. 

5. Aftertaste: 2/5 

A crucial part of the coffee-drinking experience is the lingering taste or aftertaste left in the mouth after each sip. A great aftertaste can be a delightful conclusion to a sip, leaving the drinker eager for the next one. In the case of the Lavazza Gran Selezione, the aftertaste did not provide this satisfaction.

The lingering flavor was quite mild and faded away rather quickly, leaving a slight bitterness at the back of the tongue. As someone who relishes a lasting, robust aftertaste from my dark roasts, this coffee did not fulfill my expectations. Thus, the Aftertaste score was negatively affected. 

6. Price to Quality Ratio: 2/5 

At $0.79 per ounce, the Lavazza Gran Selezione Ground Coffee Blend doesn’t quite deliver a value proposition that matches its quality. As a consumer, when we purchase a product, we’re looking for a great return on our investment. 

Unfortunately, this coffee didn’t quite deliver on that front. Given its overall quality, the price point feels a bit steep, especially when other coffees in the same price range offer a more satisfying flavor profile and overall experience. Hence, its Price to Quality Ratio score is relatively low.

In conclusion, Lavazza Gran Selezione Ground Coffee Blend, despite promising an enticing dark roast experience, fell short on several fronts. Its body and flavor were somewhat underwhelming, the acidity was excessive for a dark roast, and the aftertaste was less satisfying than one might hope.
